Learn Japanese

Learn Japanese Online

The web is a vast place, and with so much information, it can be difficult to track down the best sites to learn Japanese. Below, I keep a continuously growing list of the best sites, along with the level.   If you believe you know of a site that should be added, simply shoot me a message, and I'll put it on the list. Enjoy!

Erin's Challenge - This has been one of my favorite Japanese language learning sites for quite a few years. It's free to make an account, and is perfect for beginner/intermediate learners. Each of the 25 lessons includes reading and writing practice, as well as fun games, and opportunities to speak out loud. Beginner/Intermediate

100 Grammar Points - If you need a quick and easy reference to Japanese grammar, look no further. Perhaps not the most in-depth points, but it is an excellent primer for beginning learners, and perhaps a nice review for intermediate. Beginner/Intermediate

Learning Japanese through Kanji  - Kanji, or Chinese Characters, are usually the bane of any Japanese students existance. This site may be a little tough for beginners--however, for intermediate students, it provides a daily Kanji, along with a passage using said Kanji in many different contexts. One of my favorites. Intermediate

Learning Chocolate - Strange name, sure. But, if you want to just learn vocabulary, this is it. It's bare bones--but, it does provide audio for each word, as well as a picture. Beginner

Learn Kansai-ben - Just like Americans, the Japanese have different accents, depending on which area of the country you are in. Most notorious is Kansai-ben, which is spoken around Osaka/Kyoto--and is often compared to American 'southern-drawl.' If you'd like to learn this very different dialect, this site is for you. YY Nihongo - While this site is written in Japanese, the pictures and animations are very self explanatory. These are beginner lessons, including greetings, numbers, and colors--a nice place to jump-start your learning. Beginner

GWU - Visualizing Japanese Grammar - George Washington University created these 66 Flash Animations, which help to visualize how Japanese grammar is structured, and which serves as a great device for memorization. Beginner/Intermediate

Imabi - This is my favorite resource at the moment. There are ample lessons for all levels, including weekly Kanji lists, multitudes of examples of each grammar point, and a fast, to the point system of improving your Japanese through weekly practice. All levels

U-Biq - If you're the type of person who likes things black and white, without bells and whistles, then U-Biq is a great site for you. Each grammar point is listed with little fluff. A good resource for review. All levels
